A mother arrives at the Plantation Daycare, finds a 2-year-old boy left alone inside the door is locked, the lights are off and there is no staff inside, so a woman calls 911 to get her child out.
State's Child Care Oversight: Minimal Monitoring, Lax Enforcement
A company with a chain of day care centers across the country is trying to find out what went wrong at its Plantation facility when a two-year-old boy was left inside alone.
PLANT, PLANT - A mother had to call 911 after showing up to pick up her 2-year-old daughter at daycare to find the doors locked, the lights off and her child left alone inside.
On Tuesday, Feb. 15, just after 6:00 p.m., Stephanie Martinez arrived at Plantation Child Care Center and it appeared to be closed.
Samantha Sarmlino, who is the little girl's aunt, told Local News 10 that Martinez called her hoping she had taken 2-year-old Anastasia to daycare. Sarmlino said she told Martinez she didn't have her niece.
Jenison Daycare Admits To Leaving Toddler Alone, Unattended
That's when Martinez saw her daughter in the daycare alone, peering through the window of a door, and she called 911.
A mother had to call 911 after she showed up to pick up her 2-year-old daughter at daycare and found the doors locked, the lights off and her child left alone inside.
Plantation Police and Fire Department arrived and forced the doors to release the boy. Fortunately, she was fine. It is not yet known how long the toddler was left alone in the building before her mother arrived.
Local 10 News went to the nursery to ask if anyone knew why the boy was left inside. The staff direct us to their company number.

Sarmlino said she received a response from the daycare and that she was told it probably happened because of "short staffing."
An official statement from a KinderCare spokesperson said the staff members involved have been placed on administrative leave while the company investigates the incident.
Kindercare Learning Centers is a chain of child care facilities across the United States and is headquartered in Portland, Oregon.
"At Kinder, nothing is more important to us than the safety of the children in our care. While we are grateful that the child was found quickly and was safe, this incident should not have happened.

The girl's mother told Local 10 News: "It's the worst feeling in the world. You can't do anything." Martinez said her toddler was "overwhelmed. She just came right at me . . . wouldn't let me go."
Martinez said that because the lights are off and Anastasia is left in the dark, she now has trouble sleeping.

"I just want them to be held accountable. I don't want this to ever happen to anybody else," Martinez said.

In the video of the 911 call Martinez shared with NBC Miami, the room is dark and Martinez can be heard telling the dispatcher she can see her daughter crying.
Fire department workers opened the door and found the girl in good health about 20 minutes later, the report said.
Police later learned that the nanny responsible for watching the children left at 6:20 p.m. and locked the doors, according to the report.
The police report did not say whether criminal charges are expected. The case is being investigated by the local child protective agency, the report said.

A spokesman for Kindercare, which owns the facility, said in a statement that while the company was "grateful that the child was found quickly and was safe, this incident should not have happened."
The company said it notified the local child protection agency and placed employees involved in the matter on administrative leave while it investigates.

According to Local 10, Stephanie Martinez is suing Plantation Childcare in Plantation, Florida, alleging the company never called her to pick up her daughter when staff left for the night.
Daycare Closes For The Weekend With Infant Locked Inside
When Martinez picked up her daughter, Anastasia Brathwaite, on Feb. 18, Plantation Kindercare was already closed. The lights are off and no staff members were present.
"I started knocking," Martinez said. "I knocked on every window. I can't see anything because everything is dark. And finally I heard her and she leaned against the little window, the little door, and I lost her.
Plantation police released a report describing the school's assistant principal, Nicole Burrio, and Lucilana Vigiano, a teacher, closing and locking the school doors and leaving the facility at 6:20 p.m. Police said they were called at 6:28 p.m. to the daycare .
